Q&A Spotlight - Paul Fielding

Paul FieldingPaul Fielding is Investment Manager at Brewin Dolphin

Who / what is your inspiration?

My inspiration is to challenge myself. I’m not very happy staying still and resting on my laurels.

What prompted you to get involved in volunteering?

Originally, in a rather shallow way, it was to try and get others to notice me in order to gain some sort of profile in the Birmingham business community. Since then though things have changed and I look at volunteering in a different way. It is such a satisfying thing to do; I would encourage anyone to give it a go.

Which / what type of organisation are you involved in?

I am a member of the Birmingham Future Community Development committee. One of the committee’s aims is to raise funds for the ‘Future Foundation’. My main role is to organise the team and raise sponsorship for the Birmingham Half Marathon (and to run!).

I am also a Director of the Colmore Business District BID acting as the Birmingham Future Stakeholder Director. The BID was set up just over a year ago and the main aim is to improve and promote the Colmore Business District, which is an area where over 20,000 people work.

Finally, I am also a Director of Gigbeth, ‘the UK’s most diverse music festival’.

What's the best thing about volunteering?

The sense of achievement. Seeing a tangible improvement in something that I’ve been involved in makes me very proud.

Who have you met while volunteering?

A number of talented individuals from the business community. Some well known and some not so well known. The one thing that they all have in common though is their commitment to try and make Birmingham a better place.

What projects are you working on at the moment / would like to highlight?

For Birmingham Future I am helping to organise an event aimed at trying to encourage people to join the Birmingham Future Half Marathon team. So, on that note, if anyone would like to run for our team please contact me via the Birmingham Forward office.

Why should others get involved?

As I said earlier - for the sense of achievement. Anyone can volunteer in some capacity if they wish to do so and it makes you feel good when you have done it. I tend to find that what puts people off is the problem of ‘do I have the time to do this?’ The answer to that is yes, even an hour a week can make a difference.
