A Word from the Chair - Some recent successes for Birmingham Future
It has been a busy few weeks with various requests from a range of stakeholders to hear the views of Birmingham Future.
In the week leading up to Christmas, I was joined by 2011 BYPY, Hilary Allen, as we gave evidence to the Jobs and Prosperity Commission led by Birmingham MP’s Liam Byrne and Jack Dromey. Hilary and I gave evidence for half an hour to the Commission whose core aim is to investigate how business and enterprise can contribute to the city’s skills and job creation agenda.
Birmingham Future was also asked to be a co- signatory to a letter, from key business leaders, sent to several of the main national newspapers, making a final plea to the Secretary of State for Transport, to back and give approval to the proposals to build a high speed rail link between Birmingham and London. We were delighted to show our support and to hear that the Government has given backing to the scheme.
On the day of the announcement - I was asked to take part in a joint interview with Birmingham Council Leader, Mike Whitby live on Radio Five to discuss the announcement. It’s good to know that the profile and views of Future are not only sought on a regional level but nationally too.
Future has been a strong supporter of the plans to build the HS2 link. This will be good for the city and for our sector. As the first generation of business people who will realise the real benefits of the link this is therefore, an important component in delivering on our core aim that the professional services in our city continues to develop and prosper in the future. This is an exciting transformational change for the city and will bring real benefits through added connectivity that will help to ensure we are able to compete in a global marketplace.
